About Me

I have been weight-training for over 50 years and maintain  a life-long interest and passion in health and fitness.

My interest in weight-training began when I was about 14, back in 1957, and was encouraged by my sister’s husband who was a professional boxer. He had a magnificent physique and I just wanted to look like him! I soon discovered that’s easier said than done, and like any task you want to achieve, it takes dedication, time, and commitment.

Over the years I have trained with a number of top bodybuilders. In Auckland, NZ, I became close friends with a man named Mana Garland who at the time was the current Mr New Zealand. He had a great gym in Newmarket where I learnt a lot, not just from him, but also from other high level bodybuiders and various athletes who trained there. Another great bodybuider who trained me was Burnell Williams, who held the title of Mr Bermuda and was a top3 finalist for Mr Universe that year (in the 1970s). All that was a while ago, but I’ve never forgot what I learned from these great people.

I have never really stopped lifting weights for any length of time, and on occasions where I’ve taken a few months off, I get restless and just have to get back into it. As I’ve gotten older, my training has changed – I can’t handle the big weights like I used to, but you don’t have to. The important thing is to have regular workouts that still take some effort and, most importantly, are enjoyable.

Make it part of your life and it will help keep you fit and healthy as the years roll on. I’m about to turn 69 and still have great workouts. Weight-training has helped me maintain a healthy body and I encourage anyone wanting to improve their health and fitness to get started now.

However, my interest and passion is for overall health and fitness of which weight-training is just one part of the equation. I’ve taken a great interest in nutrition over the years. As early as the late 50s when I was a teenager, I was taking vitamins and other supplements, which at the time was not viewed as cool. It was considered a ” bit strange”.  Anyway, times have changed and now supplementation is mainstream – and that’s great!

Hope my ravings were helpful to you to see if this John Nelson does have some experience with health and fitness.

Cheers

John
